Between loss and faith: Jorge Curi narrates redemption and self-discovery in The Wandering Doctor

Jorge Curi

In *The Wandering Doctor: A Story to Be Told*, Jorge Curi constructs a sensitive narrative about identity, spirituality, and inner reconstruction by following the journey of a doctor who loses his memory after an accident and begins to wander aimlessly. Along the way, the protagonist rediscovers his essence through acts of care, transformative encounters, and a faith that resists oblivion. Amidst pain, compassion, and purpose, the work invites the reader to reflect on the silent strength of love and the power of spirituality as a guide in moments of greatest darkness.

The story begins with a radical loss of memory and identity. Where did this initial idea come from—was there a specific personal experience or reflection that sparked this creative impulse?

We are living on a plane where our evolution is an obligation. Spiritual teachings reveal to us that only what we learn and our knowledge are what we take with us, even without memories of what we did and were.

Kauã loses the past, but retains a kind of “memory of the heart,” expressed in gestures of care and healing. Do you believe that our essence is stronger than our memories?

As I said in the answer to the first question, knowledge remains and is manifested through intuitions.

The book blends pain, spirituality, and purpose in a very organic way. How did you balance these themes without resorting to easy or moralistic answers?

When working with spirituality, sensitivity in organizing procedures always leads us to balance, without causing harm or avoiding preconceived notions.

The character’s journey unfolds through simple, almost everyday encounters that transform his life. Have you ever experienced situations where a stranger changed something significant in your life?

I believe that all of us, at some point in our lives, lose our identity and seek direction in the pursuit of Having, neglecting Being. Some manage to get back on track, however, many get lost.

Kauã was a successful doctor who had become detached from his true self before the accident. Do you see this as a metaphor for how society disconnects us from who we really are?

The constant pursuit of “having,” ignoring “being,” distorts principles and conduct, often leading to paths of no return.

While you were writing, was there a particular moment or scene that moved you more deeply, or that made you pause to take a breath before continuing?

This happened many times. When sleeping, I would wake up with anxiety and new ideas. The revelation that the journalist was his daughter and that he had Down syndrome. The moment when divinity reveals his passages to him. Yes, I had many moments when intuition threw me into the story.

Faith appears in the book as a silent force, not as an imposition. What is your personal relationship with spirituality and how does it influence your writing?

Spirituality manifests itself throughout this life lesson. This shows that existence teaches, when one needs to learn, in order to continue with one’s own evolution.

If the reader could finish the book carrying only one feeling or lesson in their heart, what would they want it to be?

Learning that Being and Having is healthy, but Having without concern for Being is to destroy the essence.
