Michael Jackson, Backstreet Boys, Ramones… There are not a few big names in music who were inspired by productions from the world of horror to release music videos that became acclaimed. To this list, we can add the São Paulo artist Dan Guardia, who has just released a great video for his new single “Homem Invisível”.
In the clip, released in the middle of Halloween, made by the production company UMANA and directed by Pietro Godinho (who has worked with names such as Capital Inicial and Black Alien), Dan plays a vampire hunter in the midst of a night full of deaths and fights. Inspired by horror films like “O Corvo” and even the visual aesthetic proposed by the band Evanescence, the video has a baroque theme, reinforcing light and shadow techniques in earthy tones.
The protagonist also brings with him a metaphor linked to the figure of the vampire, this classic character from the horror imagination. Not being able to see its own reflection in the mirror, the creature becomes unable to see itself and, as an indirect consequence, cannot do self-criticism, a theme very present in Dan Guardia’s songs.
Although the lyrics of the song itself do not literally address these beings, the clip helps to deepen the proposed message. It also reflects the artist’s interest in the horror genre, present since the beginning of his musical work. “It’s the genre that attracts me the most. I feel that comfort in terror because they’re usually the most deviant people. These are people who have been mistreated, bullied or something,” reflects Dan, who also drew parallels between these characters poorly regarded by society and the LGBTQIA+ community. “Nevertheless, they are people who are not afraid to show who they are”, he concludes.
“Invisible Man” is part of Hypocryphus’s, the artist’s new studio album. The album, which follows the debut Neo Ânima (2020), is the second part of a trilogy of records that Dan is planning. The current work, which brings reflections on sexuality, has another 8 tracks and will yield more singles and clips soon. “I want to fully explore the layers that this album offers”, says the musician, who intends to connect his future clips as a true cinematic universe.
