Launch presented the public with a more romantic and existentialist side in a poetic project
The singer and composer from Rio Grande do Sul Pedro Dupuy brings lightness, poetry, romanticism and existential questions in “Perfeitamente Mutável”, his new EP. Captained by his new single, the simple “Bela Balada”, the work is now available for streaming and the single wins a lyric video.
Born in Porto Alegre (RS), he started writing songs at age 19, inspired by artists such as Ray LaMontagne, Damien Rice, John Mayer, James Bay and Ed Sheeran, as a way of expressing his feelings and telling stories. Pedro Dupuy emerged on the independent scene with the EP “É Só Um Ponto de Vista”, where he mixed touches of pop and folk. Now, the musician evolves his aesthetics to show other tones and sounds of his musicality. “Bela Balada” and the new EP are further proof of this versatility, already available on the main platforms. Bringing romanticism in the midst of existential crises, his new EP “Perfectly Mutable” is coming to the platforms. What were the paths that led you to approach this topic?
With the exception of “Bela Balada”, the conception of this project was a natural reflection of some stories and circumstances that have been happening to me and the people around me in recent times, especially in the year 2021. However, my idea was deliberate mixing themes in the songs that make up the EP… I thought it would be more interesting to work on different approaches in each release.
With an enigmatic theme in its description, “Bela Balada” is one of the main singles of this EP that brings a mixture of interpretations in a banal moment. How was the writing process for this project?
This composition process was a little different than what I’m used to. It was born from the desire to include a romantic ballad in my authorial repertoire, like the big fan of the genre that I am. I have noticed that many films have spectacular, epoch-making songs written especially for their score. From then on, this desire awoke in me to find out what the result would be if I composed a song “on order”, targeting a specific genre and theme.
“Bela Balada” joins the already released “Temo Que Fuja”, “Sinceros Sorrisos” and “Por Onde Beginning”, which do you believe had the most impact?
Due to this different composition process, I believe that Bela Balada is the song that most impressed me in the released work. In fact, that’s why I chose it as the last single to be released.
Inspired by great names such as Ray LaMontagne, Damien Rice, among others, his career in music began at the age of 19. Could you tell us a little more about how it came to you?
In fact, my trajectory began at age 12, when I started taking guitar lessons. In the meantime, I experienced ups and downs in relation to my proximity to the instrument/playing music. After leaving school, experiencing the dilemmas of every teenager who “needs” to define what he wants to do with his life, I get very close to my instrument and music, there I find myself. At the age of 19, then, I started composing songs, and naturally, as I came from the guitar, my influences were artists who explored more this raw and organic sound of the instrument, as is the case of the aforementioned artists.
In his biography, it is said that music was really a good way to express his feelings. Do you believe that it could have served as something therapeutic in your life?
For sure! When I catch myself thinking a lot about something, either because of euphoria with something positive, or because of anxiety with something negative, I am already aware that picking up the instrument and writing about it will help me deal with it and better process what I am feeling . Sometimes I write almost like a diary, sometimes in music, but the fact is that putting ideas on paper helps me a lot to organize my thoughts.
Before this new EP, you had started your career exploring pop and folk tones in “É Só Um Ponto de Vista”. What are the main differentials that you see in this current project?
Truth! I’ve included some new sound references in my range of sounds for this new work, no doubt. I’ve been listening to some slightly different styles and trying to absorb some into my work. In “Perfectly Mutable”, I didn’t stick so much to the guitar as the lead instrument of the songs, as before, now having much more guitars in the arrangements. In addition to the guitars, “Bela Balada” also includes synthesizers, something I hadn’t done in any of my songs until then. In addition, I can already see that my next works are taking shape following the style of the latest releases.
What are your expectations for your career in the year 2033?
My plan is to release another 4 singles EP. I have many compositions “in the drawer” and this January I am working on the arrangements to define which ones will compose this new work. In the meantime, I intend to play a lot for my city. This part of performing live is something that I consider very special, the connection we can establish with people in these situations is something indescribable, without a doubt it moves me as much as the passion for composing, recording, releasing… if not more.
