The hilarious show “A Night on Broadway” is about to arrive in Rio de Janeiro for a brief season, promising to bring laughter from the public. Under the direction of Fernanda Chamma, the plot narrates the saga of two actors looking for success on Broadway, played by the talented duo Fabi Bang, giving life to the character Bella Bianchi, and Rodrigo Negrini, playing Jota Camargo. The curtains open at Teatro Claro MAIS RJ, from November 17th to 19th.
Tickets for the performances in Rio are now available, both online and at the box office of Teatro Claro MAIS RJ, located at Rua Siqueira Campos, 143 – 2º Piso, Copacabana (no convenience fee). Written by Marília Toledo and Emílio Boechat, with musical direction by Jorge de Godoy and Rafael Marão, “Uma Noite na Broadway” delves into the journey of two Brazilian artists who aspire to stardom in the great musicals of New York. With comical moments that are intertwined with the situations experienced by the characters, the musical comedy celebrates more than 20 years of this genre in Brazil. The agile narrative is punctuated by songs from renowned classics that have marked global stages.
By bringing to the public Brazilian versions of super productions such as West Side Story, Mamma Mia!, Wicked, Fiddler on the Roof, Les Misérables, The Little Mermaid, Rent, The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, The Phantom of the Opera and Grease , “A Night on Broadway” promises a unique theatrical experience. Fernanda Chamma, director of the show, highlights the dynamism provided by the collaboration between Fabi Bang and Rodrigo Negrini, both recognized for their captivating performances.
To make the production even more immersive, the set, created by Interface Filmes by Luciana Ferraz and Otavio Juliano, uses projections that transport the viewer through different environments in New York, including the iconic Times Square. Stephanie Mayorkis, partner at EGG Entretenimento, shares the excitement for the return of the show, stating that the 2023 season represents a true tour of Brazilian stages.
“A Night on Broadway” is a vibrant musical comedy that brings together hits from some of Broadway’s greatest musicals, successfully adapted for Brazilian audiences. The plot follows the journey of two Brazilian artists at different stages of their careers: Bella Bianchi (Fabi Bang), an extremely self-centered actress who leaves for New York in search of success, and Jota Camargo (Rodrigo Negrini), a Brazilian actor who has For five years he has been trying to make an international career in the United States, living on underemployment. Despite their differences and lack of affinity, Bella and Jota join forces to achieve the much-desired fame in the land of Uncle Sam.
Can you tell us more about your character? What can viewers expect from your performances?
I bring Jota Camargo to life, a young Brazilian actor who went to try a life in the United States. But, obviously, to stay there, he needs to work in several different places to pursue his dream, which is to be a Broadway actor.
He loves Broadway musicals and therefore his life is full of musical numbers; Whenever a specific situation occurs in his life, he ends up associating it with a musical number and from there these big Broadway hits appear.
The show celebrates more than 20 years of the musical genre in Brazil. How is this celebration represented on stage?
It is a great festival of some musicals that have already been performed in Brazil. I believe that we Brazilians are very inspired by Broadway musicals and the story of Jota Camargo and Bela Bianchi is precisely the pursuit of this dream of performing in the birthplace of musicals. Every actor who works in musicals sees themselves at some point in history.
What is the importance of Brazilian versions of great musicals in interacting with the plot proposed by the authors?
The Brazilian versions tie together the entire story written by the authors, they connect one scene to another and make the story more dynamic and make the show a musical. These are musical numbers that have some connection with the subject we are dealing with in each scene.
What are the expectations for the season in Rio de Janeiro, considering the success of the previous season in São Paulo?
I really miss performing in Rio de Janeiro. My last time playing in the wonderful city was in 2015. So I’m excited for you, because I know that the audience in Rio is super warm and that makes the musical even more fun because we can connect even more with the audience.
How have audiences reacted to “A Night on Broadway”? Are there any experiences or feedback that stand out?
They have enjoyed it a lot and proof of this is having met, at the end of the show, several people who came back to see the most elusive musical once. It’s a sign that it’s cool, right?! Everyone leaves saying they wanted more, that they had a lot of fun.
What are the challenges and rewards of taking a show of this size to different cities in Brazil?
The rewards outweigh the challenges. Obviously there is a whole production team that takes care of all the logistics of the set, lighting, audio, etc., but they are already very well-prepared and get everything ready very quickly. I love traveling and performing to different audiences, it’s enriching; Depending on where we are, we may need to adapt some jokes so that the audience can identify even more… each show is unique! In the end, it’s just joy!
