Strange as it sounds, postpartum depression is more common than you might think. According to the Faculty of Medicine of Minas Gerais (UFMG), 25% of women who are going through the puerperium suffer from postpartum depression. Lack of attention to oneself can have major consequences on the mother’s mental health.

There are two types of diagnoses for mothers who give birth, baby blues and postpartum depression. According to the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (FioCruz), the baby blues disease is identified in 1 out of 4 mothers of newborns in the country.

Diagnoses for diseases are made in different ways, they have similarities, but they are not the same. Baby Blues is a condition that manifests itself in the mother in the first days after childbirth, causing a feeling of sadness. The causes vary from social maternal pressure, breastfeeding difficulties, hormonal oscillation, among others, whereas postpartum depression is a disorder that affects women after childbirth, characterized by deep sadness. It can promote a lack of interest in daily activities, insomnia, extreme tiredness, anxiety, feelings of guilt, lack of connection with the baby, among other symptoms.
