One of the main exponents of national alternative rock in the last decade, Selvagens à Procura de Lei releases the clip for their recent single “Por Todo o Universo”. The track brings with it a deep exploration of human relationships and the passage of time and gains a register guided by animation to create a playful and magical environment.

“Por Todo o Universo” reveals itself as a tribute not only to shared memories, but also to deep personal influences. Rafa Martins (guitar and vocals), Gabriel Aragão (guitar and vocals), Caio Evangelista (bass and backing vocals) and Nicholas Magalhães (drums) bring to light a musical connection that evokes the feelings and experiences that shaped their trajectory as friends and companions on the road in this song delves into the complexities of a lasting friendship that, despite having gone through different stages of life, eventually found itself separated by unforeseen circumstances.

The single’s sound is an interesting twist for the group, marking a return to the sonic roots that characterized their first steps on the music scene. By delving into elements that refer to their initial essence, Selvagens demonstrate the versatility that made them famous, exposing a fluidity that embraces both longtime fans and new listeners. The track follows the well-received “O Verão Passou, Mas o Sol Continua Aqui”, an optimistic indie rock.

With “Por Todo o Universo”, Selvagens à Procura de Lei adds to a trajectory that has four albums released and several singles, in addition to having international tours and stints on stages such as the Lollapalooza 2014 and 2018 and Rock in Rio 2019 festivals. After personal projects by its members – such as Rafa and Gabriel, who released solo albums -, Selvagens resumed their energetic and poetic, pulsating and lyrical sound.

How did the inspiration behind the song “Por Todo o Universo” come about? What was the creative process to compose this special track?

“Throughout the Universe” It’s a very old idea of writing about a formative friendship, which followed through key periods and which, for various reasons, there was a distancing. So it’s this look at the past, but with remnants of the present moment.

The video for “Por Todo o Universo” It’s a charming animation. How did the idea of using this approach to represent the depth of human relationships and the passage of time come about?

The idea of these two singles that we released in 2023 was a return to the band’s roots in many ways, including in the “do it yourself” way. that we had at the beginning of the band. So making this type of more independent material was a path to follow as well. Doing everything on a green background was cool, as we’ve never tried that in previous music videos.

To what extent did personal experiences and friendships between the band members influence the creation of this song?

Both “The Summer Has Passed” as “Throughout the Universe” It has this look at the past, almost as if it were also a rescue of the ties that unite us to the band. This double meaning really happens.

With “Por Todo o Universo”, there was a return to the group’s sonic roots. Could you tell us more about this journey of rediscovery and what it represents for the band’s trajectory?

It’s like making a sound again that we are very intimate with. Everything came together very quickly and naturally, very fluid. It’s a good and fun perspective on the band at this current stage. I believe the next album will go in that direction.

What is the central message behind the song? How does this track relate to the themes of human relationships and the passage of time?

“Life is calm in the eye of the hurricane” I think that’s the phrase that sums it up well. When we are in adulthood, with all the routine in front of us, and we remember our old friendships, it is easy to feel a connection despite the distance and an understanding about this distance. It’s kind of accepting life as it is and at the same time celebrating the past.

The clip presents an animated narrative rich in details. What was the process of designing this look like and how do you believe this animation complements the music?

Director Roger Capone and I were collecting all kinds of ideas of what we could test on a green background. It is also worth highlighting the single cover art that we used throughout the clip, made by artist João Lauro Fonte.

You mentioned that the single comes after personal projects by band members. How did these individual experiences influence the sound and composition of “Por Todo o Universo”?

Well, for me, after releasing “Rua Mundo Novo”, which has that pressure of a solo debut, it was good to have fun with Selvagens’ rock again. I think it has the feeling of reuniting with old friends, where magic happens naturally and detachedly. It’s a collective work. Coming back from a solo release gives new value to what is created together.

Over the years, the band went through different musical phases. What was the process like of combining elements from your past musical journeys with the band’s current proposal in this song?

We are always wearing other colors, so to speak. But I believe that the solo releases already had the flavor of stepping into new territories, and, with the band, we needed, then, a ground, something more solid, at least at that moment. So, it was good to let things happen, in terms of composition and arrangements, the way it was in the beginning: in rehearsals, and then recording everything quickly, to capture this more urgent spirit of a young band that has something to say.

The clip, directed by Roger Capone, is a captivating visual companion to the track. What was it like collaborating with Capone to bring the essence of the music to life in a visual experience?

Capone has good experience with this type of approach and has been with us in other situations: he participated in the filming of Ao Vivo Na Maloca Dragão, directed the video for Solidão Me Levau and other actions by the band. So, after filming, we focused on small elements of the cover, different effects and so on. We tested a lot of things, cut them, redid them.

Considering the release of “Por Todo o Universo”, what are the future plans of Selvagens à Procura de Lei? Are there any new projects or musical directions that the band intends to explore after this release?

Next year, I will be back in Fortaleza so that we can dive into a new world of lyrics and music and I hope that we only leave there with a new album that we are proud to release. I can’t wait for this moment.
