After shining as part of JVKE’s 2023 summer tour “What Tour Feels Like” across the United States, singer and songwriter Maisy Kay is celebrating the success of her latest work. Her new single, “Sunlight,” released on February 14, 2024, quickly made waves in global editorial playlists on Spotify and Apple Music, amassing over 565,000 views on YouTube and more than 225,000 streams on the music platform. The success doesn’t stop there; her follow-up single, “In Your Car,” debuted on April 5 and won over listeners with its infectious energy.
Maisy Kay reached a pinnacle with the release of “Technicolor Honeymoon” and its stunning music video on May 10, as part of the EP Wonderlust: The Dawn. The track not only captivated fans but also topped the charts, reaching #1 on the Pop Charts and #5 on the General Charts on YouTube. With a rising trajectory and warm reception, Maisy is now preparing for a new adventure. She will be supporting the acclaimed Tori Kelly on the Purple Skies World Tour, which kicks off this summer/fall 2024, promising more exciting moments for her fans around the world.
You mention that the idea for “Technicolor Honeymoon” came after a vibrant and colorful trip. Can you share more details about that experience and how it influenced the creation of the song?
I had gone on a trip with my partner to celebrate having finished my first tour, and it was such an incredibly romantic experience I just knew I’d have to write about it. It was the best vacation I’d ever had, and both the colors of the nature and the vibrancy of the emotions I was feeling helped coin the name “Technicolor Honeymoon”
How did you feel seeing “Technicolor Honeymoon” reach #1 on the Pop Charts and #5 on the Overall YouTube Charts? What was the reaction from your fans and your team?
I couldn’t believe it! Tears were definitely shed. I’ve never charted before, and to see my name up there on iTunes surrounded by so many talented artists was such a huge honor, it still doesn’t feel real! My team was all so excited and I couldn’t have done it without them, and I know my fans were so supportive and excited too!
The single “Sunlight” and the EP “Wonderlust: The Dawn” have received significant attention on streaming platforms and editorial playlists. How did you prepare for this release phase, and what has the public response been like?
I had a lot of time to sit with the EP as I wrote all the songs for it pretty quick. It was one of those things that effortlessly come together. I was nervous because it’s definitely the most vulnerable I’ve ever been on a project, but I was excited too! The public response has been amazing and truly quelled any fears I had regarding it. It’s so wonderful to read fans’ stories of what the songs mean to them, and how it made them think of their loved ones.
You had the opportunity to support JVKE on his summer tour. How did this experience influence your own music and performances? What did you learn from that tour?
It was one of the greatest experiences of my life, and heavily influenced how I write songs and how I want them to sound. There’s always a thought of “how will this sound live?” now. It also taught me a lot about stage presence, and just how many factors come into making a good show.
Your next project includes supporting Tori Kelly on her Purple Skies World Tour. What are your expectations for this tour, and what are you most excited to share with the audience during this experience?
I have no idea what to expect, but I am so excited to get to join Tori and hopefully meet a bunch of my fans again! I’m especially excited to tour Asia and get to visit a bunch of places I’ve never been to before. I’m excited to show the audience brand-new music, and of course, there will be butterflies involved again!
You released the single “In Your Car” and had great success with it. Can you tell us about the inspiration behind this song and the creation process?
In Your Car came about because of how my partner would always open my car door for me. It was a simple gesture, but one that showed a lot of care. I wanted to write a song that expresses the joy of a newer relationship, but also the nervousness of, will things always be this sweet? Will you still love me and treat me this way when the honeymoon phase is over, or when things are hard? There’s a lot of vulnerability in the lyrics disguised by the happy-sounding production.
How would you describe the evolution of your sound from the beginning of your career until now? What do you believe has changed in your musical and artistic approach?
I’ve experimented with a lot of different sounds over the years, and I never wanted to box myself in too heavily to just one sound, as I like so many different genres of music! I started off very alternative, darker, and moodier, which is a stark contrast to my latest release, Wonderlust, a pop EP full of love songs! I’ve always tried to write about my own life, but I think what has changed is my confidence in myself and my writing, and my ability to have fun with what I make and not get quite as caught up in the “Is it good enough?” Cycle of thought. (Although admittedly, I still have those thoughts, they’re just less debilitating now.)
