Release brings reflection on connection with others in a sound that “embraces”; single arrives on music apps on Thursday (12)
After feeling the pain of a relationship and its vulnerabilities, the heart sometimes just asks for a break. Even though there is still a desire to be available, the protection created may still be a real obstacle to reconnecting with people with an open heart. It was reflecting on this that singer and composer Pris wrote the song “Heart Closed”, produced by Guto Guerra, which will be released on all music apps on Thursday (12). The single will also feature a music video that will air on the artist’s YouTube on the 26th, at 6 pm.
Inspired by the sound of Billie Eilish’s old songs, Pris felt as if the combination of the melody of the voice and the low sound of the harmony gave the sensation of being “hugged sonically” and wanted to bring that feeling to this production. “It’s a song that deals with a dense theme and I wanted to try to bring that density to the sound in some way, I wanted it to give goosebumps to whoever connects with the message”, she explains.
To achieve this, the singer and her producer worked on layers of voice that accompanied the main vocal, as if it were a choir. “We made the song grow from almost an acapella with a sub bass to a soft piano and, finally, an almost orchestral sound that gives that epic touch to the song,” she explains. “’Heart Closed’ was an experience from the beginning. I wrote it in the early hours of the morning before traveling to Rio de Janeiro to produce and record it. I didn’t know exactly what it would be. The melody was created with my producer, Guto Guerra, in the most organic way possible. It was truly something from the heart, much more intuitive than cognitive,” adds the artist.
‘ FREEDOM TO EXPERIMENT’
Since the recent release of “Discipline,” Pris has been working on a more mature and authentic project, which will culminate in the release of her first career album, “Multidimensional,” later this year. The release of “Heart Closed” – which is part of this album – also flirts with the artist’s previous songs. “This is the most different song on the project in terms of style and musical genre. I would say it’s a reminder that, even though I’m choosing a more defined path in terms of the type of sound I want to make, I can and should still have the freedom to experiment musically,” says the singer.
This freedom is also evident in the creation and production of the song’s music video, recorded by the artist herself, in a moment of introspection in nature. “Since I’m talking about knowing how to love myself so I can open my heart, it seemed poetic to me that I could have images as a visual for ‘Heart Closed’ that were a real representation of this. It’s a dive into my heart, because the key to it lies only within me. So, I felt that it was something I should do alone. Art imitating life”, comments Pris.
CLOSED HEART?
Although the name of the song and the time in which it was written bring up the idea of distancing oneself and closing one’s heart to others, the song proposes a reflection that was achieved throughout the artist’s personal process with herself. “I understood that the best thing to do is to build a sense of self-love so great that the heart opens without fear of exposing itself, because no matter what happens, we will always have ourselves and we can always manage our own perceptions so that they stop being focused only on problems and disappointment and become valuable lessons about who we are,” she says. “The main message of the song is that in order for us to be able to open ourselves to others and to life in general, without feeling exposed and defensive, afraid of being hurt, we need to learn to love ourselves first. This is a search that has been with me for some time now,” she concludes.

+ ABOUT PRIS
Born and raised in São Paulo, Pris began writing her songs based on her personal experiences to help her deal with and understand her own feelings and thoughts when they became too heavy. With her guitar always in hand, what was once a form of self-discovery became a passion that resulted in strong and honest lyrics, which usually focus on bringing a positive message about life and making the best of challenges and difficulties.
As a child of the 90s, her musicality was influenced by a myriad of references and genres that accompanied her throughout her life. In her new career, the artist appropriates elements from different styles such as Rap-Jazz, Indie, MPB and rock, in a mix that is difficult to put into a single box, but which results in a unique identity in Pris’ sound.
