Son of acclaimed filmmaker Steven Spielberg, Sawyer Spielberg showcases his talent as the lead in the drama Martyr of Gowanus, screened at the 2025 Julien Dubuque International Film Festival. In the feature directed by Brian Meere, the actor portrays a house painter in post-9/11 Brooklyn, grappling with personal trauma and moral dilemmas while navigating a neighborhood in transformation. With a deep and sensitive performance, Sawyer establishes himself as a promising name in contemporary independent cinema.
Your character in Martyr Of Gowanus is intense, layered, and dealing with difficult issues. What was it like to dive into such an emotionally charged universe?
It wasn’t easy immersing myself into this world but I trusted Brian and the cast. Acting has always been a way for me to learn more about history and myself. and by the time we wrapped I felt lighter and more empathetic.
Post-9/11 Brooklyn is more than just a setting — it almost feels like a character itself. How did that environment influence your performance?
9/11 changed history forever and even today people are still affected by what happened. After the attacks people came together in a profound way so when we were doing all the scenes post the attacks there was an urgency to connect more with the characters. A need to not go throw this alone and a sense of your own mortality. The environment brought the cast and crew together in a way other films wouldn’t.

There’s a big responsibility in portraying both collective and individual trauma. How did you prepare emotionally for that?
It’s a great opportunity for an actor to take on a role like this. I really enjoyed the process. I built a playlist on my phone of music of this time and before a heavy scene I’d hide away in the corner and listen. I also would get dinner with the cast every night after shooting to build our bond.
Taking part in the Julien Dubuque IFF is also a moment of celebration. What does this premiere mean to you personally and professionally?
JDIFF is a great festival and I’m really honored they chose our film. I’m really grateful martyr of Gowanus is able to get this kind of exposure.

What kind of connection do you hope to create with the audience through your character?
Gavin’s an ordinary guy who was deeply hurt by his circumstances. I hope people learn by watching the film that no one should ever go through trauma alone. And if you’re struggling don’t keep it in connect to your community around you.
