Created by Lauren Davidi and Hillary Lewis, the series offers a fresh, comedic lens on modern relationships and the unshakable power of friendship. Elina Yael’s portrayal brings a refreshing authenticity to the screen, showing that resilience and tenderness can coexist in a character who doesn’t need to be loud to be heard.
With strong appeal to Gen Z and millennial audiences, Chasing Cupid embraces female-driven storytelling, and Elina’s performance helps anchor the series in both comedy and heart.
Piper is a character that breaks away from traditional female stereotypes. How did you go about creating such an authentic character?
I think in a lot of ways Piper and I are very similar, which allows me to channel the most authentic version of myself into her struggles with relationships and the way she responds and connects with her friends.
What drew you most to Chasing Cupid when you first read the script?
What drew me to Chasing Cupid most was the relatability of it all. At the time I was single and desperately struggling to even find someone interesting enough to go on a date with. And the rare times I would find that I found myself in the weirdest situations telling my friends the most absurd things the men I went out with would do. Piper’s character in particular resonated with me because of the unwavering support she gives her friends even when she doesn’t agree with their decisions and the pickiness she has towards commitment. It’s not that she doesn’t want to commit to someone, but no one she finds is quite worth her time.
The series has a comedic tone, but it also touches on deep themes of vulnerability. Which scene challenged you the most emotionally?
We are only a short way into filming the show but I have to say that my scene waking up in bed with a “stranger” I met the night before challenged me emotionally. While it was a fun scene to film It definitely took some vulnerability to get into bed with an actor I hadn’t met prior to filming the scene. I think this sort of had me reflect about the kind of vulnerability, and at the same time, lack thereof that Piper gives and receives during her short encounters with men.
How was the chemistry among the cast during filming? Was there room for improvisation, or did you stick closely to the script?
The chemistry among the cast is amazing! We all get a long really well and respect each other’s talents and goals. Everyone on set inspires me so much! We definitely improvise a lot and have the ability to share our own ideas and thoughts. When the camera comes on we do have to have somewhat of a consistent script so that the audio and shots match up.
How do you see Piper’s role within the friend group dynamic?
I think piper is very much the friend who both rolls her eyes but embraces the chaos that are her friend’s dating lives. She does her best to give advice, but at the end of the day understands that they are going to do what they want but she’s there to support them every step of the way no matter what.
What kind of message do you hope viewers take away from getting to know Piper?
I hope they take away that there’s no shame in exploring their desires and test out different kinds of relationships, but to also be choosey about the relationships they really put energy into and that some of the most important relationships in your life are your friends.
