One of the most iconic landmarks in Copacabana and in the city of Rio de Janeiro, the Copacabana Fort is about to celebrate its 111th anniversary. Built between 1908 and 1914 by the German company Krupp to be the most powerful stronghold in Latin America at the time, the fortress was inaugurated at 2 p.m. on September 28, 1914, by then-President of the Republic, Marshal Hermes da Fonseca.
To mark this milestone, the Copacabana Fort has prepared a special program for visitors. On Sunday, September 28, admission will be free for those who follow the official Instagram account (@fortedecopacabana), upon proof at the ticket office.
On Saturday, September 27, starting at 6 p.m., visitors will enjoy a major concert by the Copacabana Fort Orchestra, featuring a special performance by the Symphonic Band of the Rio de Janeiro State Fire Department.
The celebrations continue on Sunday, September 28, also at 6 p.m., with the theater group “Teatro no Forte,” presenting two comedies, one French and one Brazilian.
Alongside these cultural events, visitors can explore the permanent collections of the Army Historical Museum and enjoy two special exhibitions: It’s Time for Ikebana, promoted in the Brazilian Army Hall by the Consulate-General of Japan in Rio de Janeiro and the Brazil-Japan Cultural Institute, and Military Medals and Decorations, promoted by the Brazilian Numismatic Society in the Short-Term Exhibition Hall. Both exhibitions are supported by the Fort and will be open from September 23 to 28, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
The experience at the Army Historical Museum and Copacabana Fort (MHEx/FC) is further enhanced by the chance to enjoy a full meal at one of its restaurants (Confeitaria Colombo or Café 18 do Forte), visit the souvenir shop Arte e Rio, and take in breathtaking panoramic views of the city from the Alameda or the Cannon Dome.
Join us for this celebration. You are our special guest!
