Held for the first time in the Amazon, COP30 brings together heads of state, political leaders, experts, companies and civil society organizations to discuss pathways for climate-change mitigation and adaptation.

Finland — globally recognized for its leadership in sustainability and for setting one of the world’s most ambitious climate goals, becoming carbon-neutral by 2035 — marked its presence in Belém with its own pavilion. The pavilion hosted multiple panels on nuclear energy, fusion energy, smart finance, AI, decarbonization, digital resilience, circular economy, green hydrogen, among other topics.

The Finnish delegation included, in addition to President Alexander Stubb, three cabinet ministers — Ville Tarvio (Development), Sakari Puisto (Economy) and Sari Multala (Climate and Environment) — as well as Finland’s Ambassador to Brazil, Antti Kaski, three Finnish Consuls in Brazil, and approximately 40 other members representing the Finnish “triple helix” system (government, universities and the private sector), along with business associations such as the Confederation of Finnish Industries (EK).

President Alexander Stubb honored the event by participating in the Leaders’ Summit.

At COP30, Finland joined the Global Initiative on Climate Change Information Integrity, aimed at combating climate misinformation and promoting science-based, evidence-driven communication. In his remarks, Ambassador Antti Kaski highlighted Finland–Brazil cooperation on media literacy and the importance of science and reliable information for the climate debate.

During his participation at COP30, the Honorary Consul attended high-level meetings and thematic panels — both in the Finnish pavilion and others — as well as activities focused on sustainable development. He also witnessed a historic agreement supporting municipal decarbonization, signed by Caixa’s President, Carlos Antônio Vieira Fernandes, the Vice-President of the National Association of Mayors, Mayor Zelmut Marten, and Horeb Energy CEO, Pedro Cejas.

Notably, in January 2025, Pedro Cejas took part in a naval delegation to Finland, led by the Consul, during which he visited Wärtsilä in Vaasa and learned about the world’s first hybrid ethanol-diesel ship engine. Importantly, Horeb Energy’s GreenPlus nano-catalyst technology has been validated by Wärtsilä with no restrictions for use in its engines. The GreenPlus nano-catalyst is compatible with cars, motorcycles, trucks, buses, tractors, and more. Through the addition of one liter of catalyst to 20,000 liters of fuel, these transition-energy blends achieve a 10% reduction in carbon footprint, a 50% reduction in secondary emissions, a 30% reduction in fine particles and black carbon, along with improved fuel efficiency.

Under the agreement signed with Caixa — which includes several decarbonization actions — Horeb will initially support carbon-emission mitigation in the municipal fleet of São Lourenço do Sul, where Zelmut Marten serves as mayor, and subsequently in other Brazilian cities.

Horeb Energy also met with EK, the Confederation of Finnish Industries, with the intention of contributing to Finland’s goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2035.

According to the Consul, this edition of COP represents a turning point — both for the need to accelerate the implementation of the Paris Agreement through concrete strategies and actions, and for the expansion of climate finance for countries with tropical forests.

The hosting of COP30, as well as prior events held in Belém — such as the BioEconomy Forum (Oct/21) and the Amazonia in Loco Conference (Nov/21), both organized with Finnish institutional support — clearly demonstrate the Amazon’s crucial role in combating global warming.

Undoubtedly, the success of COP30 will be measured by the answer to a very simple question: Do the new climate plans defined at COP30 place the world on a viable path to limit warming to a level compatible with life on Earth?
