Group of artists wins over audiences with “Acidentalmente Amor”, a musical project inspired by the hits of the 2000s

Acidentalmente Amor

The group Acidentalmente Amor (Accidentally Love) emerged spontaneously among friends and quickly transformed into a far-reaching artistic project, winning over audiences on social media with creative reinterpretations of 2000s pop hits. Composed of eight artists, the collective combines music, humor, and nostalgia in Portuguese versions of international classics, as well as original productions that gave rise to the album “Acidentalmente Amor: Um Musical Pop Anos 2000” (Accidentally Love: A 2000s Pop Musical). With millions of online views, pocket shows in Rio de Janeiro, and plans to expand to the stage, the group is consolidating its identity as a contemporary musical that celebrates the fond memories of a generation.

Accidentally Love was born spontaneously, between friends and without any great pretensions. At what point did you feel that it could turn into something bigger and more serious?

BEL MIRANDA: So, actually, Acidentalmente Amor (Accidentally Love) originated from a musical piece written by our friend Tiago Menezes, who is now one of the members of the vocal group. He gathered several friends from the theater—we are friends and acquaintances from that world—and brought these people together, at the beginning of 2024, to do a pocket show with the songs from the play he had written.

We spent about three months meeting to rehearse these songs for the pocket show. The songs in the musical were pop songs from the 2000s, which were adapted and made sense with the text he had created.

In one of those rehearsals, we recorded a video of Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance,” in Tiago’s version. He posted this video on TikTok without any intention, and it ended up going viral. At the time, we had about 800,000 views. Then, the Choquei page shared the video, which further increased its reach. It was something we didn’t expect. We just put our phones out and recorded a rehearsal. It was crazy.

From that point on, we started to realize that people liked these versions of international songs translated into Portuguese. So we started posting other songs from the play. Some went viral, others not so much, but we began to understand that it really had potential.

After that, we decided to cover songs that weren’t just from the 2000s, but also current songs or songs we liked. We recorded Olivia Rodrigo, Taylor Swift, Sabrina Carpenter, among other artists. And we started receiving a very positive response from the public.

That’s when we understood that this could turn into something bigger. We began to envision two projects: the play Accidentally Love, created by Tiago, and the vocal group Accidentally Love, which produces content for the internet in a choral format.

We are a group of eight friends, and we started to realize that if we professionalized the project more and invested more time and effort, we could achieve something even greater. Because of our schedules, we were never able to maintain a very consistent frequency, so we’ve been recording videos irregularly for about two years.

But this year we decided to fully invest in the vocal group, and we’re getting a very positive response from the audience. This only makes us want to continue. We have many ideas, we’re truly a group of friends, and we’re always thinking of new ways to evolve the project. It’s been a very special process.

The project carries a strong nostalgic identity, with direct references to the 2000s. How is it for you to revisit songs and productions that were part of your childhood and adolescence and transform them into something new?

LARISSA TRAVASSOS: Yes, we have those references from the 2000s. Before Acidentalmente Amor became a vocal group, it was a musical piece built with songs from that era, adapted into Portuguese. It was from that that we recorded a video for the internet, with Lady Gaga’s song “Bad Romance” in Portuguese, and it went viral. After that, we never stopped.

I think it’s a really fun part, because it revisits our childhood and also the childhood of many people of our generation, who grew up watching Disney cartoons and consuming content from that era. It’s very special to be able to bring that nostalgia to people and see that they really get on board with us and enjoy what we’re doing.

You all also work in other artistic fields. How does being part of Acidentamente Amor contribute to each of your individual growth and the building of your portfolios?

KARIN MEDEIROS: We love being part of the project, mainly because the foundation of everything is our friendship. It started as a joke between friends, which worked out and ended up becoming a job. Besides that, there’s the art aspect. We are all artists. We are actors, we sing, we have members who do voice acting, who dance, tap dancing. Art is very present in all of our lives.

Being part of Acidentamente Amor greatly contributes to our artistic growth. Every week we record a new video, learn new songs and harmonies, and help each other. We are constantly evolving, as artists and as people. Another very important point is the recognition we are gaining on social media. Today we have around 200,000 followers on TikTok and almost 60,000 on Instagram. This shows that our art is being seen and valued.

We’ve received many comments, compliments, and suggestions, and that’s very rewarding. There’s also the possibility of future partnerships with brands and sponsors. But above all, the group represents continuity. The acting profession is very difficult, full of setbacks, and the group allows us to continue making art, regardless of that.

Each member brings a different background, references, and talents. In your view, what do you believe each person contributes to the group’s identity and energy?

PAULO FREITAS: I believe that what strengthens our group is our diversity. We are different and similar at the same time, and this generates many ideas and creative contributions. We don’t have an external team. It’s just the eight of us, and we divide the tasks internally. There are those who edit the audio, those who edit the video, those who take care of the aesthetics, the clothes, and the image. This organization ensures that no one is overburdened and that we maintain the quality of the work, preserving the essence of the group.

ENZO CESPOM: I come from an artistic and musical background that is very focused on technique and discipline. Of course, I make mistakes, like everyone else, but I always try to bring lightness to the group. I believe I contribute with ideas, positive energy, and dedication during rehearsals and recordings. I always try to keep the group motivated and open to new proposals.

You started on social media with a video that went viral, and today you build a large part of your connection with your audience there. What has it been like to grow organically and see people’s reactions to the project?

ANA BEATRIZ TAVARES: It’s been a lot of fun, especially when we get recognized on the street. We’re still not used to it, but it’s very rewarding. The public’s response has been extremely positive, both in the comments and in the individual support of the members. It’s also very nice to see friends and acquaintances following and encouraging our work. This gives us even more motivation to continue.

The album “Accidentally Love: A 2000s Pop Musical” marks the realization of a collective dream. What does this release represent for you, individually, within your artistic journeys?

TIAGO MENEZES: Recording the album was a dream come true. The project started as a musical piece, but ended up gaining a much larger dimension through social media. The album allows our art to reach a much wider audience, beyond the theater. It’s a way to immortalize the project and share our story with more people.

I, Tiago, as the creator, have an even greater affection for this, because these are my versions and arrangements. I’ve always been passionate about musical theatre, and being able to provide this experience to other people is extremely rewarding.

This project also stems from your friendship. What’s it like experiencing this creative process alongside close friends and sharing the stage, ideas, and dreams?

VICTOR GALISTEU: Experiencing this process alongside friends makes everything more special. There’s trust, creative freedom, and a very genuine exchange between us. Working with friends demands maturity, but it also makes everything lighter and more meaningful. The group was born from friendship, and today we transform that friendship into art.

If each of you had to define Accidentally Love in one word or feeling, what would it be and why?

VICTOR GALISTEU: If I had to sum it up in one word, it would be persistence. From the beginning, we faced many challenges, but we continued to believe in the project.

BEL MIRANDA: For me, it’s about connection. The group has become a family, and that connection is what strengthens our work.

ENZO CESPOM: I would say they have great chemistry. The group functions like a perfectly fitted puzzle.

KARIN MEDEIROS: I would say it’s a perfect match. There’s a very strong artistic and personal connection between us.

LARISSA TRAVASSOS: The word would be accomplishment. We are achieving dreams together.

PAULO FREITAS: For me, it’s about identification. The audience recognizes themselves in our work, and that motivates us to continue.
