MC Lullu, singer, songwriter and music producer, is emerging onto the Brazilian music scene with a daring proposal. Born and raised in the metropolitan region of Belo Horizonte, Lullu brings a unique blend of influences, fusing elements of punk rock, grunge, death metal, electronic music and funk. Her eclectic sound has conquered digital platforms, with singles that have gone viral, reaching millions of streams. In partnership with the diversity label Peneira Musical, she is releasing her third album “Mc Lullu”, an experimental project that positions her as an up-and-coming performer and music producer.
“Automotivo Holiday” is reaching top positions on Spotify’s Top Viral in Brazil and Portugal. How would you describe the feeling of seeing your music conquering an international audience?
It’s an incredible and indescribable feeling. It’s a recognition of our hard work and dedication to music. Seeing our music appreciated internationally is a mixture of emotion, gratitude and inspiration to continue creating and sharing my art with the world. I’m deeply grateful for the support of the fans and for the opportunity to reach such a diverse audience.
The collaboration on “Automotivo Holiday” is a unique blend of talents, including you, DJ Brunin XM and Kinechan. What was the working dynamic and creative process like for this hit?
The dynamic with DJ Brunin XM and Kinechan was incredible, we connected in a crazy way, ideas flowing, pure energy! The idea for the song came from Kine. The vibe is incredible, I see this trend growing, it’s great, because it’s the street speaking loudly, and it’s our sound gaining ground!
“Automotivo Holiday” has a contagious energy, perfect for car speakers. How did the idea behind the song come about and how do you see this trend of sounds made for the automotive environment?
The idea for “Automotivo Holiday” and the other automotives came from the vibe of the car rides on the streets! The wave is captured in that energy, that beat that makes the windows shake in the car speakers. It’s as if we were making baile funk for cars, you know? This trend is pure authenticity, it’s the street speaking loudly, it’s the sound of the periphery gaining its space. It’s incredible to see how people connect with this vibe, turning their cars into real dance floors on wheels. It’s funk invading the asphalt and I’m loving being part of this movement!
This is your second hit on Spotify’s viral charts. What do you think has contributed to the consistent success of your songs, and what impact has this had on your career?
I believe that authenticity is the key to the consistent success of my songs. Each lyric is true, it comes from the heart and soul. People feel that real vibe, and that creates a genuine connection. This impact on my career has been incredible, opening doors, amplifying my voice and showing the world the power of funk. It’s as if each success is another step on the ladder of recognition, strengthening my presence on the music scene and motivating me to take Brazilian funk to new horizons.
Your new self-titled album is about to be released. Can you give us a preview of what fans can expect in terms of style and theme for this album?
My new album is a dive into the roots of Brazilian funk, but with a modern and innovative twist. It will have heavy beats that make everyone dance, lyrics that tell real stories, with messages of resistance. It will also have a mix of styles, showing diversity. It’s an album that celebrates my authenticity, and I’m sure the fans will identify with it and enjoy it very much.
You’re an artist who values diversity and authenticity in your music. How do you think this is reflected in the album “MC Lullu” and in your artistic career in general?
Diversity and authenticity are the essence of my being and, of course, of the album “MC Lullu”. Each track is a piece of the puzzle, with influences from techno, funk and even punk rock. In my lyrics, I deal with real themes from my life, stories of overcoming, sex and violence. My artistic career is a direct reflection of my life, the streets where I grew up, the people I met. It’s about giving voice to my experiences, which despite the challenges, I’m very proud of. My commitment is to maintain this authenticity in everything I do, always connecting to my roots and representing my truth in every beat and verse.
Brazilian funk is gaining international prominence. What do you think is driving this global popularity, and how do you see your role in this movement?
Brazilian funk is conquering the world because it is the voice of the periphery, it is authentic and represents the truth of our communities. The infectious beat, the lyrics that speak of real life, all of this resonates with people from different cultures. The world is looking for authenticity, and Brazilian funk offers it in a raw form and powerful. My role in this movement is to have the responsibility to represent it with dignity. If I happen to be a representative of the true sound of the periphery, I will use that strength to make the world know and respect our roots. I want to show that Brazilian funk isn’t just music, it’s an expression of resistance, culture and struggle. It’s our voice echoing across the four corners of the planet, and I’m very proud to be part of this movement.
As well as music, you’re also a music producer. How do you balance your various skills and passions when creating your art?
My singing and production skills intertwine, allowing me to tell stories in different ways. In the studio, I create beats that represent my essence, and in my lyrics, I bring those beats to life, sharing my stories with the public. It’s a fusion of passions that drives me to innovate, setting no limits to expressing myself artistically.
You’ve mentioned that your album is influenced by various musical styles. What are some of the artists or genres that have most influenced your music and why?
My sound is certainly a mixture of powerful influences. The experimentalism of Björk and Air inspires me to think outside the box, bringing innovative elements to Brazilian funk. From Nirvana and Sonic Youth, I absorb the raw energy of grunge, adding a pinch of rebellion to my beats. From the techno/deep house scene, I go from artists like Funky Fat to Kraftwerk, it’s the power of the fusion of rhythms, while young DJ MP7015 and the sounds of Mandela add a futuristic, pulsating vibe to my music. It’s this diversity that enriches my work, creating a unique experience for my listeners, a musical journey that embraces authenticity and innovation.
Looking ahead, what are your plans and goals for your musical career? Are there any dream collaborations or stages you’d like to perform on?
For my future in music, I dream of collaborations with artists like Björk, Air, Front 242, Kraftwerk, Tiga, MC Carol, DJ Vhooí, Badsista and Deyse Tigrona. I imagine myself on stage at Coachella, Lollapalooza, Primavera Sound and Rock in Rio, sharing my music with fans from all over the world.
