Brazilian journalist and photographer Carolina Tulim, currently residing in Rome, Italy, brings her new exhibition to Brazil, which debuts at the Legislative Assembly of the State of Goiás in the month of Black Consciousness with portraits taken in June this year on a photographic expedition in Ethiopia, in East Africa. The opening of the exhibition will be on Tuesday (21st), at 5pm, in block C of Alego, and the exhibition will be available to the public until December 8th. With archaeological finds dating back more than 3 million years, it is a region of ancient and extremely rich and exuberant culture. The photos in the exhibition were taken in one of the most important places in the country, the city of Lalibela, which has 11 Orthodox Christian churches carved from rough stone dating back to the 12th and 13th centuries.
More than reaffirming the immeasurable architectural value of her temples, in this exhibition, the photographer sought to illustrate her interest in portraying the beauty and way of life of the Ethiopian people who live far from the capital, with their colors, habits, beliefs and hospitality.
“Although the language in Ethiopia is Amharic, which even has its own alphabet, communication was always facilitated, whether in English or even through gestures and facial expressions, by the openness, kindness and hospitality of the people in Lalibela. We felt safe, well received and welcomed by the community at all times. And the natural way they pose for the camera reflects the genuine kindness that constitutes their way of being. Ethiopia is definitely one of the most incredible places I’ve ever been to,” says Tulim .
Carolina has lived outside Brazil for six years, four years in Moscow, Russia, and two years in Rome. In 2019, she was selected to exhibit her photographs at Russia’s oldest arts institution, the Moscow-based Russian Academy of Arts. The exhibition was curated by Grigory Bogomolov and included artists from nine countries. In the same year, she held solo exhibitions in Goiânia and Brasília with the theme “Silk Road – a Brazilian look at Central Asia”, which included records made in Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan.
The photographer maintains the “Clicks Around the World” project, which contains clicks from photographic expeditions she took to more than 50 countries, on four continents. The last of them included Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam and is preparing to become a book.
