How have your main musical influences shaped your artistic style, Ruby Anderson?
They shaped my style by encouraging me to see life from different perspectives. Composing songs is writing about stories and lived experiences, so seeing the world through different points of view helps me a lot. For example, any singer can sing about heartbreak, but someone like Ariana Grande can sing differently compared to Amy Winehouse, and that inspires me.
How has the contract with MDC Music contributed to the continued development of your art and the recording of your own compositions?
I’ve been singing my whole life, but I only started singing professionally when I signed with MDC Music, so I have a lot to thank them for helping me put music in my words and making my dreams come true.
Could you tell us more about the song “I’m Done” and what it represents for you on your musical journey?
“I’m Done” represents an important milestone for me, as it was my first original song. I spent a lot of time trying to perfect this song, and when it came out it was so rewarding and satisfying to see it reach people.
What was the inspiration behind the “In A Lonely Place” EP and how does it reflect your artistic growth?
I wrote my debut EP “In A Lonely Place” during the pandemic and especially during isolation. Just as it was a tough time for anyone in the world, it was tough for me and it seemed to be taking a toll on my mental health, so I thought to myself, since I’m feeling these feelings, why not turn them into songs, whether it’s a true story or fictitious.
Could you tell us about the theme and message conveyed in your most recent single, “Saturday Night”?
Since the pandemic ended and I released my EP, which was written during that time, I thought I’d celebrate with more upbeat and uplifting music. It has a fun, summers in L.A. vibe, and the lyrics tell a story about young love. I thought it was a sweet and adventurous story.
How was the experience of performing live at the 2023 International Portuguese Music Award ceremony and what was the importance of that moment in your career?
This was also a milestone for me as it was my first time performing on something televised and I even had the detail that I released new music that night so I was really excited to be a part of it and I am extremely honored and grateful to have worked with such talented people there. I really enjoyed it.
How does exposure in different countries, such as Portugal and Canada, contribute to expanding the reach and recognition of your work?
It contributes significantly as social media and connection is very important to building a platform and a fan base, so having that kind of exposure is incredibly helpful and makes me really happy to see that people around the world like and share my music.
How do you plan to continue pushing the boundaries of your music and exploring new territories to reach a wider audience? What are your next projects and goals in the music industry?
I plan to continue testing the boundaries by simply being myself. I’m weird and unusual so I like to play with that and share that part of myself with others. I want to experiment with my sound and move more in a pop direction, because why not? As for upcoming projects, I will be writing more material and sharing it with my fans.
