In *The Conscience of Humanity – The Coherence of the World?*, biochemist and writer Alfredo Sá Almeida analyzes the multiple crises plaguing contemporary society—environmental, ethical, political, and social—and proposes a response based on building a human and collective consciousness. Combining science, spirituality, and social responsibility, the author argues that the transformation of the planet begins with recognizing the interdependence of all life forms and adopting sustainable and supportive practices that restore harmony to the fragmented world in which we live.

The book’s title poses a provocative question: “The coherence of the world?” In your view, what does this question symbolize—is it an invitation to doubt, to hope, or to the urgency to rethink our paths?

The subtitle of the book “The Coherence of the World?” is an invitation to hope and the urgent need to rethink our paths to the future. The truth is that today’s humanity still lacks a Global Collective Consciousness because it is essentially focused on its own life and personal awareness, due to all kinds of deficiencies (economic, educational, limited experiences, etc.). Broadening horizons is essential. Urgent.

We live in an age where information is abundant, but wisdom seems scarce. How do you believe we can transform this excess of data into true human consciousness?

Abundant information is a positive factor, although much of this information is of little value because it is ‘infected’ with fake news, beliefs, and distorted knowledge. Wisdom is scarce due to the lack of education that guides human minds and scientific research consistent with human needs. We need training in citizenship and human values throughout our educational path.

The book discusses a “collective consciousness” as the foundation for a more balanced future. What would be the first practical steps to awakening this consciousness in such an individualistic society?

Society is highly individualistic due to the monetary power wielded over EVERYONE. People are essentially focused on their lives, their Being, and on personally overcoming all situations, regardless of anyone else. Few know how to live in a stable community with intrinsic wisdom. But living in a communion of ideas and principles is possible and desirable with a specific education. Take Japanese education as an example.

You emphasize the importance of mental health and critical thinking. In an increasingly fast-paced world, how can we cultivate clarity without falling into apathy or pessimism in the face of crises?

Regardless of the world’s acceleration, Critical Thinking can be taught and help prevent mental disorders. There are so many subjects about the Human Being, both individually and collectively, that we are not taught due to ‘stupid’ prejudices, which means we end up not being well prepared for Life, whether individual or collective. Monetary pressures are devastating. To which world do we want to belong: the world of Being or of Having?

The concept of the interdependence of life—human and nonhuman—features strongly in the book. How can science and spirituality work together in this broader understanding of existence?

The concept of the interdependence of Life should be conveyed to EVERYONE from a very early age. Spirituality is very personal, but Science is collective. They must walk hand in hand, provided they do not hinder each other. Human existence on this Planet will be crucial to a better Future for EVERYONE. Please see the attached image for all these questions. We will be the only ones with the appropriate knowledge.

The book proposes an ethical and responsible perspective on the planet. How do you see the role of education and culture in building this global ethic of care?

Everything that humanity has destroyed on this planet is only driving us toward the Point of No Return. When we pass this Point, will we be able to call ourselves Human Beings, or will we simply be able to live like animals? Education should focus on the aspects of Sustainability of Life and Global Ethics, coupled with assessments of the Human Value of every Human Being. Human Value is essential to the Life of this Planet.

Throughout your career, you’ve moved from science to philosophy and writing. At what point did you realize you needed to transform your reflections into literature to reach more people?

As you know, I’ve been immersed in scientific research (both pure and applied) for 15 years of my life. Science leads us to many questions and to explore the interrelationships between them. Biochemistry demands this because it is directly related to living systems. When I entered the world of Management, I learned to deal with the contradictions of Life, a field of Philosophy. As I’ve always shared everything I researched and how I understood Management, Writing comes next.

For the reader who experiences the tensions and uncertainties of today, what would be the main message that you hope The conscience of humanity – the coherence of the world? awakens?

Today’s tensions and uncertainties are essentially related to a lack of education (in all areas) and a lack of learning about community life and democratic traditions. Human life, globally, must be more respected and dignified. Prioritize education at all levels. Consciousness is the inner harmony we are capable of establishing, depending on our lives. It is our coherence!
