In Sweet Magnolias, Ella Grace Helton brings Katie Townsend to life in a season that deepens the character’s family bonds, sense of community, and growing place within Serenity. In the interview, the actress reflects on being welcomed into the world of the series, learning from an experienced cast, and being part of a show that connects with audiences of all ages. At a moment of career expansion, Ella is also set to appear in Brothers, the new Apple TV+ comedy in which she plays Clara McConaughey, the daughter of Matthew McConaughey’s character.
You joined Sweet Magnolias as Katie Townsend, a character who was already part of the Townsend family’s story. What was it like for you to step into that role and bring your own energy to Katie?
I definitely was nervous because all these people knew each other and had chemistry working together, but everyone opened up to me quickly and made me feel welcome like I had always been there. So I very quickly was able to feel at home and open to being Katie.
Season 5 brings new chapters for Maddie, her family, and the people of Serenity. How would you describe Katie’s journey in this new season?
Katie deepened her close relationship with her stepdad Cal and her brothers Kyle and Isaac. I feel like she got to participate in more of Serenity’s activities, especially being the stats girl for the alumni baseball game.

Sweet Magnolias is loved by audiences for its themes of family, friendship, new beginnings, and community. What do you enjoy most about the message of the show?
I like how even though you may be at rock bottom, there are still people who will be there for you to lean on, and lift you up. I also like how it’s a show my friends and younger audiences can watch, too.
What has it been like working with such an experienced cast, including JoAnna Garcia Swisher, Justin Bruening, Logan Allen, and the rest of the Townsend family?
Everyone but Logan teaches me stuff. Just kidding! I have to get in my sisterly jab. Because Joanna and Brooke got to direct episodes, they definitely taught me a lot about different ways of doing things that I had not thought of before. I also am honored that I get to work with Jodi Benson, who is my step grandmother on the show, and who is a Disney princess! She is the voice of Ariel in “The Little Mermaid.”

Besides acting, you are also connected to dance, music, art, and creativity. How do those other passions help you as an actress?
My other creative passions help me for when I have auditions that require singing or dancing. And I even got to dance and sing in a handful of my projects already. (One example is in the Sweet Magnolias season 4 episode “Dance Your Sugarplum Off,” where Katie dances in The Netcracker). My ultimate dream is to one day be a part of a Disney musical.
You have already worked across film, television, and theater. What has Sweet Magnolias taught you about being part of a series watched by fans around the world?
It’s amazing to know that this show creates connections with people all around the world and that the Townsend family and all the characters are loved.
